Milky Way blue

by Charlotte Culot

Drawing on Henri Matisse’s later paper cut-outs, this work translates his use of bold organic forms and vivid colour into textile, its composition reflecting the clarity and energy of Matisse’s cut-paper language. Through its scale and surface, the piece takes on the presence of a mural when presented vertically. Its expansive composition and tactile qualities invite a closer encounter, extending the visual language of painting into a woven form. Composed primarily of silk, the surface reflects light to reveal subtle variations in tone and texture.
